I know I have said this before, but this time I really mean it. I think the biggest problem with it is that it is so far removed from being enjoyable for me. I find most tracks are boring. They are only interesting for about 2 minutes and then drone on. I would have to say it’s the genre’s fault for this being that it’s made for djing. There are very few songs that I can listen to all the way through with out getting bored and that is mostly the older stuff.
I will say that most dnb is well engineered. That’s also it’s downfall for me. It’s engineering first and musicality second. I often feel that things are done in this genre simply because they can be done not because the song needs it. I admit that I also am a perpetrator of that crime too, and have had my share of doing things in my music for the sake of doing it and for no other reason, but often times I recognize that it’s a bad idea. Henceforth those posts of music failures I have here.
One thing that will always stick with me that I learned from playing drums is that when you play you should do what the song needs, not what you want. This simply means that if the songs requires a simple beat you don’t need to be doing a solo through the whole piece. That’s a bit drastic but it’s so true. I’ve heard songs where they start out good and then take a turn and go in a direction that it didn’t need to go.
All in all, I feel that dnb is like all that I mentioned above. The last thing I have to say about it is that the only thing holding dnb back is dnb itself.
